I could only handle 30 seconds of this - again I submit, this is not a way to bridge the gap between church and culture. It's a lot like Napoleon Dynamite meets Joel Olsteen live on stage in Branson, Missouri.

I love the break down at 1:50. You just gotta persevere, a renewed mind is the key.

Ouch, my eyes! They are so upset with me for showing them that video that they may never open again.

what i really appreciate is the solid theology.

just_me_tiff - true, very true.

rymsmall - the break down is pretty funny - the guy is actually a good dancer, but just really cheesy!!!

Francois - Hillsong's got nothing on these guys ;)

Dave - solid man, real solid.

Goodness gracious. I couldn't finish it. It gave me an upset stomach. I think I need to pray for these people. I don't beleive the words that are coming out of their mouths.

Hayley said...

How long do you think they practiced that routine...oh my word!

Kevin said...

An upset stomach describes it pretty well Rachel - well said.

Hayley, I thought of that too - it had to have taken an incredible amount of time to be so gooooood...?

I generally ask myself when viewing such things...Name the Denomination. Any guesses?

This is definitely not the charismatic two-step, so that throws out a bunch of churches. Methodists, Lutherans, Episcopals, Presbyterians and the like would not do anything this smarmy. They're more likely to have real dancers and less likely to be playing keyboards.

I actually might guess LDS on this one. That or some brand of Baptist. "Wild" enough to allow dancing on stage, yet the dancing is so...restrained...and the outfits so conservative.

What say you?

Kevin said...

A lot of idiosyncrasies here.

- big church
- conservative dress
- Southern vibe
- use of tech (YouTube)
- mad keyboarding skills
- smooth dance moves

I'm going Southern Baptist.

As a student a Southern Baptist seminary...I can assure you that this is indeed Southern Baptist..ha. jk. That might have been the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. I believe Keith Olberman would call them the worst people ever. You know they felt like tools the whole time, well at least I hope they did.

Nicky Stade said...

I saw a clip of this on The Soup! It was hilarious!!

Carrie said...

All right @Mike James and @Kevin Davis, I'll defer to your Southern Baptist expertise. I am sadly lacking in S.B. experience, being a Northern girl.

@Kevin Davis - please do NOT tell me they put this on YouTube themselves.

@Mike James I honestly don't think they felt like tools. Actually they looked quite proud of their efforts and as someone noted, they were well synchronized.

Carrie said...

Oh and...I forgot...fake plants. In my very limited experience I believe the South is more predisposed to excessive use of fake plants in church buildings. I think they're an abomination. PLEASE no fake plants in 242 EVER!!!!!

No, the Weetopia mushrooms do not count. They are cute.

Kevin said...

Carrie - Uhh? No it is some random guys YouTube account and it is the only video he has on there.

And the Weetopia mushrooms are ridiculous and resemble a questionable male organ - not kid or church appropriate ;D

Carrie said...

@Kevin Davis what is with the hate for the mushrooms? They provide my kids with essential entertainment on a weekly basis. Just don't put 'em on stage.

And another thing...women singing background vocals smacks of a Baptist church. You've got to have a man in charge on stage, ya know. :)

Oh come on you guys... LAUGH! It's kind of funny!! They've got balls being up there singing and dancing like that!! There are people of every religion and denomination that are out of the ordinary and exhibit ideas that maybe aren't so great. People are strange.. that's a fact! As much as i would love to "bridge the gap" between church and culture, who are we to point fingers at them? Even if it was a horrible idea, looks completely ridiculous, and makes them feel like they've lost a few brain cells afterward... I'm sure these people are good people and I'm sure the message they are trying to communicate isn't a bad one. So even though it looks utterly ridiculous... just laugh!

Kevin said...

Thanks for the guilt trip Ashley ;)

You're right, I'm sure they are good people, with big hearts and cute kids. And I'm definitely laughing...with them of course.

Anonymous said...

Wow, not sure who ashley is but.
Maybe you should laugh.
All I know is this doesn't touch my heart, or the southern baptist soul I've adopted while living in Branson, Mo!
hahahahaha

Ok, this is ridiculous. Sorry Ash, but these people are morons. It's embarrassing to watch. If this is the best they can come up with to bridge any "gap", this church is in a world of hurt. They just don't get it.

It is funny though. I would love to see it live.

rev med,

I believe she did, signified by the phrase "Oh come on you guys... LAUGH! It's kind of funny!!"

:)

My esteemed colleague and Orel Roberts U graduate was able to track down the church's website:

http://www.theway.org/Current/M07/Mar07Hi4.html

Apparently it is an Ohio based nondenom. He suggested a road trip. Oh, and it is a recent video.

I saw this a month or so ago. There are a ton of vids on their website.

Its true though. the renewed mind is the key to Christ in me.

Kevin said...

Okay - only a church this awesome at singing would have this big a statue of Jesus out front:

http://jeffboriss.typepad.com/thoughts_from/2007/10/touchdown-jesus.html

I searched deep in the archives of my buddy Jeff Boriss' blog to find these pic's. We actually passed this church on our vacation this summer - it is amazing, amazing waste of money.

Carrie said...

some of the other vids are equally entertaining. I guess it just goes to show that there are all different kinds of believers with all different kinds of taste.

Carrie said...

@Kevin Davis - they're the Touchdown Jesus Church?? No way! SWEET.

Why is the name of their church trademarked?
